Department of English

The Department of English has been functioning in the Guru Nanak College, Budhlada, Mansa (Punjab) since 1971. The vision of the Department is to enhance communication skills among the rural students, deficient in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills (LSRW), to enable them to face challenges and achieve excellence. The Department organises not only extra-curricular activities, but also conferences and interactive sessions with distinguished national and international personalities. It is also associated with interdisciplinary intellectual activities with various departments and facilities within the college. The Department focuses on ICT tools in order to impart quality education to the students. A-state-of-the-art "Language Lab" has been established in the Department to cater to the needs of students of English as well as other departments of the college and the faculty at large. Add-on English Speaking is successfully running in college to make students a good communicator and to get them prepared for IELTS, TOFFEL. 'Literati English Club' has been formed to encourage the students to participate in various programs and activities and broaden their horizon and experience. It not only imparts academic and subject knowledge, but also grooms its students in their individual talents too. 
Objectives 

  • To create interest in English language among rural students.
  • To develop the communicative skills of English language. 
  • To create interest of literature among the students. To enable the students in acquiring the knowledge of emerging Literature and to know its relative comparison among existing Literary Works. 
  • Besides the Department also runs a Career Oriented course- Personality and Skills Development certificate course. To strengthen abilities in listening, speaking, reading and Writing Skills of English language. 
  • To improve the skill of technical writing. To provide quality education and training to meet student’s needs for education, in addition to pioneering the development of innovative technologies for teaching and learning. 
  • Enrichment and enhancement of intellectual knowledge based through organisation of seminars, conferences, and workshops. 
  • To introduce students to the grammatical properties in order to enable them to write and speak English consciously. h) To train them both in precision and in appropriate use of language through prose reading.
  • To acquaint students with a keen and subtle way in which the English language is used.

Master of Arts in English

MA in English is an amalgamation of ancient and modern English Literature which mainly comprises four primary areas of focus, Poetry, Prose, Drama, and Linguistics. At the master's level, the study of English Literature is not limited only to the works of English writers but it incorporates the pieces of creation of writers from all over the world. MA in English gives the students a chance to delve into the vast ocean of literature from around the world, including literature from America, Canadia, Australia, Scotland, India, Poland, France, etc.

  • Eligibility: Graduate with 50% in English Literature or 50% in any stream

  • Duration: 2 Years
